another dollar

every day the wind's whisper finds my ear
"sellout, sellout" it breathes
the tumult, angst, nervous leg jerks,
are the breadcrumbs that define the path
providing nourishment for the demon birds
making an accurate return impossible
behind me creeping constantly
is a cynical hound who's bay is a refrain
a music that sifts through the fortress
a hard rock melody without chorus
a song sung in mono, hi-fi, stereo, and quad
a befitting torture for the crime of underachievement
humpty lies unrepairable as resources abound
it's the motive as well as the ability
as the shards of psyche lie helpless, disorganized
time sands shift and shift again
as the gusts negate gravity
and the bifocals make one blind
wherewith this still reality
becomes a mindless repetitive chore
something one could do in his sleep
were he ever to find such
something i can do in the dark
and have for 30 years
